Project Keep Our Troops Warm

Hat patternCool

Materials:

  • 150 Yards Worsted Weight Yarn*
  • Appropriate colors for our Troops: blue, green, brown, tan, gray, black
  • No bright colors
  • Do not add any pom-poms, tassels or embellishments.
  • Preferably, use super wash wools!  Please tag hat if not super wash and specify washing instructions.
  • Size 8straight needles or Size 8 circular needles 16’ long with a set of dpn’s to match.

Gauge: 5 sts per inch. Get close to gauge but don’t worry too much about gauge, the more sizes the better…what won’t fit one will fit another! Just get knittin’.

For Straight Needles:

Cast on 80 sts. (If you knit tightly you may add more stitches in multiples of 4. Work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2”.  Work in stockinet stitch (K1 row, P1 row) until total length is 7" from cast on edge.

Begin decreases:
Row 1: *K6, K2tog*

Row 2: Purl
Row 3: *K5, K2tog*
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: *K4, K2tog* 
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: *K3, K2tog*
Row 8: Purl
Row 9: *K2, K2tog*
Row 10: Purl
Row 11 *K1, K2tog*
Row 12: Purl
Row 13: *K2tog *

Cut yarn leaving a LONG tail. Using a darning needle thread the yarn tail & sew seams.  Weave ends.

For Circular Needles:

Cast on 80 sts. (If you knit tightly you may add more stitches in multiples of 4.

Work in ribbing K2, P2 for 2”.

Work all rounds until piece measures 7” from cast on edge.  Change to dpn’s when needed.

Begin decreases:
Round 1: *K6, K2tog* around
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *K5, K2tog* around
Round 4: Knit
Round 5: *K4, K2tog* around
Round 6: Knit
Round 7: *K3, K2tog* around
Round 8: Knit
Round 9: *K2, K2tog* around
Round 10: Knit
Round 11 *K1, K2tog* around
Round 12: Knit
Round 13: *K2tog

Cut yarn leaving a 6" tail. Using a darning needle thread the 6" inch yarn tail through remaining sts and firmly fasten. Weave ends.

Beer Cozy Pattern!

1. Cast 32 stitches onto 1 of the needles. Divide the stitches among 3 of the needles, with 12, 12, and 8 stitches on the needles.
2. Join the stitches in a circle and work 5 rounds in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing.
3. Work the next 14 rounds in stockinette stitch (knit only, since you’re working in the round). If you want to make a stripe around the cozy, attach the second color at the beginning of round 9 and return to the main color at the beginning of round 17.
4. Work 5 rounds in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing.
5. Bind off, and use your yarn needle to weave in the loose ends.

improvisation ideas: Knit the cozy in your favorite team’s colors. You can also personalize it by cross-stitching an initial on the front.
